Study techniques backed by science: active recall and spaced practice

Re-reading notes feels productive but fades fast. Two well-researched methods make revision stick for far longer.

Most learners revise by re-reading and highlighting. It feels productive, but research shows it is one of the least effective ways to remember. Two techniques consistently outperform it, and both are simple to start.

Active recall

Instead of re-reading, close the book and try to retrieve the information from memory - answer a question, explain a concept aloud, or write out what you remember. The effort of recalling is what strengthens the memory. Flashcards and past-paper questions are perfect for this.

Spaced practice

Cramming everything into one session fades quickly. Spreading revision across days and weeks, and revisiting each topic a few times, locks it in for the long term. A short review today, another in three days, and another next week beats one long marathon.

Putting them together

Combine the two: quiz yourself on a topic, wait a few days, then quiz yourself again. The Sino AI assistant can generate the questions and space them out for you, turning revision into active, well-timed practice rather than passive reading.
